- Following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, America was fearful
of political radicals.
- The Red Scare refers to the threat of Communist radicals sabotaging our
government.

- Attacks on minorities increased as America intolerant of minority
views. The KKK grew to its
largest membership.

- In 1919, many workers went on strike to protest long work days & low
pay. This led to violence in some
areas.

- Many white Americans were suspicious of ethnic Europeans and anyone who
criticized the war.
- Espionage Act - made it illegal to say anything that would discourage
men from registering for the draft.

- Sedition Act - made it illegal to speak disrespectfully of either the
govt. or its symbols (flag,Constitution,uniform).

- Blacks & women were offered jobs usually held by white men.
- However, after the war many of those jobs were again taken by the men.
